Shutter repairs & maintenance in Lake Macquarie
On a saltwater lake, repairs aren't an afterthought. Salt finds the hinges, the tilt rods and the finish, and it doesn't care who made the shutter. We repair and maintain shutters across the lake city, including ones we didn't fit, and we take the small jobs other installers won't come out for.
The usual suspects, east of the highway
- Stiff or slipping tilt
A tilt rod that needs two hands, or louvres that won't hold their angle. Usually tension, wear or corrosion in the mechanism; often adjustable on the spot.
- Seized or corroded hinges
The classic salt-air failure. We free, replace or upgrade to stainless so the panel swings the way it did on day one.
- Dropped or damaged louvres
A blade out of true, cracked, or missing. Single-blade replacement is often possible; we'll tell you when it isn't.
- Panels out of square
A panel that rubs, won't close flush, or has sagged on its hinges. Re-hanging and adjustment is bread and butter work.
- Salt-hazed or chalked finish
Sometimes it cleans back; sometimes it's honest wear. We'll assess it straight rather than sell you a repaint that won't hold.
- Catches, magnets & small hardware
The five-dollar parts that make a shutter feel broken. Quick fixes, worth doing.
One honest caveat: some repairs need parts from the original maker, and some systems aren't ours to open. When that's the case we'll say so at the assessment, and you'll know before any money moves.
Salt is patient
Within a street or two of the water, salt rides every onshore breeze and settles on whatever doesn't get wiped. On shutters that means hinges first, then tilt mechanisms, then the finish. None of it is a fault; it's the cost of living where you can see the lake, and most of it is maintainable if someone actually turns up.
That's the gap we fill. A repair visit is a small job by trade standards, and plenty of businesses quietly don't want it. We do, because the homeowner with a seized hinge this year is often the whole-home fit-out in a few years, and because the work deserves doing either way.
The salt-air shutter care checklist
Twice a year is enough for most homes; quarterly if you can taste the salt on the wind. Print it, stick it in the linen press, and your shutters will outlast the neighbours'.
- Wipe the louvres with a damp microfibre cloth, both faces. No solvents, no scourers; salt dissolves in plain water.
- Wipe the frame tops and sills where salt and dust settle thickest, including the track on bi-folds and sliders.
- Work every hinge through its full swing. A hinge that squeaks or hesitates now is a hinge that seizes by summer.
- Run the tilt fully open to fully closed on each panel. It should move with one finger and hold where you leave it.
- Check the finish in raking light for hazing or chalking, especially on windows facing the water.
- Look at the fastener heads: any rust bloom on screws is your early warning, cheap to fix while it's cosmetic.
- After a big blow off the lake, add one extra wipe-down. Storm spray carries the heaviest salt load of the year.

Do you repair shutters you didn't install?
Yes. Most of the repair work we do is on shutters fitted by someone else, sometimes decades ago. If parts are proprietary to the original maker we'll say so at the assessment.
Is my job too small?
No. One stiff tilt rod is a real job. Small repairs are most of this pillar, and they're welcome.
What does a repair cost?
We don't publish prices because a repair can be anything from a five-minute adjustment to a re-make of several panels. The assessment tells us which it is, and you get the price before any work starts. No obligation either way.
